Star Atlas is an upcoming open-world, space adventure and grand strategy MMORPG for PC (Windows) with browser and VR support. The game is set in the year 2620, where players are citizens of three major factions (humankind, alien races, and sentient androids) competing for resources, territorial conquest, and political domination, and have the ability to influence the outcome of the ongoing intergalactic conflict while earning rewards for their contributions. The core game features grand strategy space exploration, PVE & PVP, a player-driver economy offering multiple role-playing or career options, crafting, in-depth character customization, and more. Star Atlas integrates blockchain technology (Solana) to record and secure ownership of digital assets earned or purchased by players, namely NFT assets (e.g. land, ships, characters, equipment) and cryptocurrency. Star Atlas has its own cryptocurrencies ($ATLAS and $POLIS), NFT marketplace, and decentralized autonomous organization(s) (DAO).

Game Features

  • Space Exploration: Players will immerse themselves in a spectacular and living galaxy-spanning metaverse set in the future where players can fly anywhere using state-of-the-art spaceships.
  • Grand Strategy MMO: Players join one of the three main factions (Alien consortium, Humankind and Androids) as they fight or forge alliances for resources, territorial conquest and political domination.
  • Sandbox Metaverse: Entire space-cities may be constructed and governed by players. Structures include mining and space stations with commerce, shipyard, refinery, hangar, retail, university, cargo and defensive decks.
  • Player-Driven Economy : Players can buy and sell the resources they collect (e.g. by mining resource-rich areas) and offer services to one another (e.g. bounty hunting, rescue, smuggling) on the internal/external marketplace.
  • In-depth Customization: Players have the ability to customize and equip their character and spaceships with a wide range of utility/cosmetic items and options to suit their career or role-play needs.
  • Play-to-Earn: A variety of in-game, NFT-backed resources and items may be earned directly upon completing specific actions (e.g. mining, PVE missions, PVP asset capture), or crafted using said resources, while cryptocurrency may be earned directly upon completing jobs listed by other players, or by trading on the marketplace.
  • Free-to-Play: Players will be able to enjoy some of game’s content for free and may earn some tradable NFTs and cryptocurrency.

Blockchain Integration

Star Atlas aims to be fully decentralized and player-owned, as players will effectively be able to own and trade all in-game digital assets (e.g. ships, components, crew, stations, land, equipment, cryptocurrency) in and outside of the game. Smart contracts built on the Solana blockchain are used (with Serum) to record and secure transactions and ownership of all such digital assets. Star Atlas has its own cryptocurrencies, $ATLAS, which serves as a medium of exchange for in-game transactions, and $POLIS, which serves as a decentralized governance token.
Star Atlas doesn’t appear to be open source. While ownership of digital assets is decentralized and secured on the blockchain, users may not be able to run the game on their own in the event that its online service is shut down.
