Decentraland is a fully decentralized and community-driven Metaverse or “virtual world” for PC (Windows & Mac) and browser, that is built, governed, and owned by its users on the Ethereum blockchain. Users can create, enjoy, own and trade or monetize content (e.g. worlds, scenes, cosmetics, artwork) and applications (e.g. games) as well as socialize and attend a wide range of daily, community-driven events (e.g. live concerts, conferences, exhibitions, dance parties). Many game genres are available and being made in Decentraland’s metaverse, including golf, adventure, puzzle, shooter, RPG, and more. Decentraland has its own currency ($MANA), NFT marketplace, system of property, and decentralized autonomous organization (DAO).

Game Features

  • User-Created Worlds & Games: Users can create, experience and trade their own virtual worlds, entities, events and games.
  • User-Created Cosmetics: Users can create, wear and trade their own cosmetic items (e.g. skins, body features).
  • Unlimited Game Genres: Users can create and experience any types of games (e.g. sports, puzzle, adventure, RPG, strategy, shooter).
  • Play-to-Earn: Rewards may be earned in the form of NFTs and $Mana by playing games or taking part in community events (some of which may require NFTs).
  • Content Creation Tools: Users are provided with free tools to create worlds, games, wearables, object interactivity, and avatar animations (“emotes”). Users can also import their own 3D models (+ info).

Blockchain Integration

Decentraland is a fully decentralized virtual world that is built, governed, and owned by its users. Smart contracts built on the Ethereum blockchain are used to record the ownership of all digital assets and other tradable items such as land and cosmetic NFTs.
Decentraland has its own cryptocurrency, $MANA, which serves as a medium of exchange for all digital goods and services traded within the ecosystem.
Through Decentraland’s decentralized autonomous organization (DAO), also powered by smart contracts, users (token holders) can submit and vote on various policies.
Decentraland’s code is open source, so anyone can make improvements or build on top of it, anyone can explore and review transactions, and anyone can host the game, so it can never be shut down and gamer purchases can never be taken down.

Ownable (NFTs)

  • Land: 16 m by 16 m LAND parcels in NFT format that are located in Genesis City (main map) and that can be bought, sold, and rented out.
  • Estates: Merger of two or more parcels of LAND that are directly adjacent to one another.
  • Wearables: Clothing, accessories, and body features that be created as NFTs (minted on Polygon) or earned by users to customize the appearance of avatars.
  • Emotes: Avatar animations (visual + audio) that can be created as NFTs (minted on Polygon) by users to customize avatar interactions (dance, stunt, greetings, poses, reactions…).
  • Names: Name assets (for avatar, land and estate) that users need to own in order to create their own personal 3D world outside of Genesis City. Names can be created as NFTs (minted on Polygon) by users for 100 Mana or imported from Ethereum Name Service.

Cryptocurrency

$MANA is Decentraland’s cryptocurrency. Its purpose is to allow users of Decentraland to purchase and sell land, goods and services from and to one another. It is a fungible, Ehereum-based, ERC20 token limited to a total original supply of 2,805,886,393. (+ info)
